Alienware M11x R2 Review

Dell enjoyed overnight success with the Alienware M11x earlier this year. This 11-inch notebook outperforms many larger laptops and is priced below $1000. Unfortunately for Dell, consumers quickly started asking for an Alienware M11x with Intel Core i7 processors. Now, less than 6 months after the release of the M11x comes the M11x R2 with Intel Core i7 and Nvidia Optimus technology for automatic graphics switching. Is this the perfect M11x? The answer might surprise you.

Our review unit of the Alienware M11x R2 features the following specifications:
  • 1.20GHz Intel Core i7 640UM (4MB Cache, max turbo frequency 2.266GHz)
  • 4GB PC3-8500 DDR3 (2 x 2GB)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
  • 11.6" WXGA WideHD LED Backlit display (1366x768)
  • 500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • Nvidia GeForce GT 335M Discrete Graphics (1GB GDDR3) with switchable Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics
  • 802.11b/g/n, 10/100 LAN
  • 3-in-1 card reader
  • 8-Cell Li-ion 64WH battery, 90W Power Supply
  • Dimensions: (W x L x H) 11.25" x 9.19" x 1.29"
  • Weight: 4.4lbs
  • Starting price: $799.99
  • Price as configured: $1,299.99
Build and Design
We reviewed the Alienware M11x a short while ago and the new "Revision 2" (R2) version of the M11x is virtually identical. Anyone familiar with the other gaming notebooks in the Alienware family should instantly recognize the design of the new M11x. In many ways the designers at Alienware tried to make this 11-inch notebook look like a tiny twin of the 15-inch M15x or the 17-inch M17x. A large part of that design heritage is the unique style of Alienware machines. Many laptops look all but identical when the lids are closed, but an Alienware laptop stands out thanks to the stylized lid with futuristic lines and a silver alien head logo. The biggest design change with the M11x R2 is the new "Soft Touch Stealth Black" finish. Compared to the old glossy black finish on the original M11x, the new exterior feels like it's coated in a rubberized protective layer similar to a business-class ThinkPad.

Also like a ThinkPad, the M11x R2 maintains the boxy design of the original M11x without a tapered edge like most notebooks. Laptops like the Dell Inspiron 11z or the HP Envy series get thinner as you move to the outside edges and thicker toward the center of the notebook. The chassis of the M11x doesn't do that because Alienware engineers needed all that space for the discrete graphics card, extra cooling, and the integrated battery. The integrated battery is also something to keep in mind when talking about the thickness of this notebook. The M11x might seem thick with its height of 1.29 inches, but if you buy the Dell Inspiron 11z or Lenovo IdeaPad U150 with 6-cell extended life batteries then they are actually thicker than this Alienware machine.

HP Envy 14 Review

About a year has passed since HP released its Envy 13 and 15, high-style notebooks aimed directly at Apple's MacBook Pros. We generally liked the designs of these metal-bodied machines, but their high prices and mediocre ergonomics dampened our enthusiasm. Now here comes the Envy 14, which starts at $999 ($1,289 as configured).

HP has tweaked the design by adding an optical drive and a backlit keyboard, but the most intriguing change is the new display size of 14.5 inches. This screen puts the Envy 14 smack dab in between the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook, and its Core i5 processor and ATI switchable graphics offer comparable performance to Apple's premium portables. More imporantly, HP has updated its touchpad so that it's much easier to use. The brilliant Radiance display is ideal for movies and games, and the notebook's Beats Audio is a pleasure for the ears. So is the Envy 14 the complete package we want it to be?

Specifications :

  • CPU: 2.4-GHz Intel Core i5-450M
  • OS: MS Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • RAM Upgradable to: 8GB
  • Hard Drive: 500GB, 7,200rpm
  • Display: 14.5-inches, 1600x900

Design
Stylistically, the Envy 14 looks the same as its predecessors: it has a taupe aluminum and magnesium body with a paisley-esque etched pattern on the lid and deck. We also like little touches like the backlit HP logo on the lid and the mostly smooth black bottom (where you can attach the optional slice battery).

As it now accommodates an optical drive, the laptop's dimensions-- 14 x 9.3 x 1.1 inches--make it slightly thicker than previous Envys, but it's still easy to slide into a messenger bag. Disappointingly, the Envy 14 weighs even more than the Envy 15 (5.4 vs. 5.2 pounds). While it's a pound heavier than the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it's slightly lighter than the 15-inch MacBook Pro (5.6 pounds). Overall, the Envy 14 doesn't look radically different than the Envy 13, but it's still easily one of the most elegant notebooks on the market.

Dell Inspiron 17R Review

The newly designed Inspiron 17R is the latest 17.3-inch desktop-replacement notebook from Dell. Equipped with the Intel Core i3 and i5 processors with Intel GMA HD graphics, this budget-friendly system is aimed at the masses. In this review we take an in-depth look at this new system and see how it performs.
  • Intel Core i3 370M processor (2.4GHz, 3MB cache)
  • 17.3-inch 1600x900 display with LED backlighting
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 4GB DDR3 memory
  • 500GB 5400rpm HDD
  • Intel HD integrated graphics
  • 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11n wireless, and Bluetooth
  • 6-cell Li-ion 48Wh battery
  • Dimensions: 16.54 x 10.87 x 1.24-1.38-inches
  • Weight: 6.67lbs starting
  • MSRP: $679
Build and Design
The newly redesigned Inspiron 17R offers a much cleaner and sleeker look and feel compared to past models. Similar to the Adamo-series, the layout has a hinge-forward design with the screen positioned just slightly in front of the back edge of the chassis. This has the added benefit of moving the screen closer to the keyboard and bringing the action to you. The outside appearance of the new 17R is very stylish, with a faux-brushed metal screen cover. The look gives the appearance of metal, although with an easier to clean painted surface. This look it also shared inside the notebook, with the palmrest and keyboard trim.

Dell XPS 15 Review

The new XPS 15 (also called the XPS L501X) is a completely redesigned multimedia notebook from Dell. Sporting a JBL sound-system with subwoofer, NVIDIA GT420M dedicated graphics, and an Intel Core i5 processor, this system is designed with performance and entertainment in mind. In this review, we take an in-depth look at the new XPS and see how it stacks up against the competition.
  • Intel Core i5 460M Processor (3MB cache, 2.53GHz)
  • 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 glossy display with LED backlighting
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT420M with 1GB DDR3
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • 6GB DDR3 memory
  • 500GB 7200rpm HDD (Seagate Momentus 7200.4)
  • Realtek gigabit ethernet and Intel 1000 802.11b/g/n wireless
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery (56Wh)
  • Dimensions: 15 x 10.4 x 1.3-1.5-inches
  • Weight: 6.21lbs
  • MSRP: $899.99 (Closest configuration)
Build and Design

The new Dell XPS 15 has a silver on grey color scheme, using metal panels and plastic for the body. Compared to past XPS designs that were trend setters that distinguished themselves from the lower models, the new XPS doesn't seem to spark much visual interest. In theory, mixing alloy panels with a brushed metal palmrest and backlit keyboard usually yields good results. The redesigned XPS 15 doesn't seem to really set itself apart, though, from the standard Inspiron 15R until you take a much closer look. Standing back five feet, the panels look like average plastic on the exterior, and the body itself even seems more bloated than the 15R. Overall, it seems like Dell missed a big opportunity to make the XPS-series the unique notebooks they once were. The result is a rather bland looking multimedia notebook where its budget-oriented sibling --the Inspiron 15R--outshines it.

ASUS U45JC-A1 Review

The U45JC has an understated yet classy look; the combination of bright silver and glossy black is aesthetically pleasing. I like how the black keyboard keys stand out against their silver surround. The U45JC is quite thin for a 14-inch laptop with such impressive specs at just 1.1" tall. The chassis has an angular shape; the very edges of the notebook are angled downward and make the notebook look slimmer than it actually is.

With the exception of the aluminum lid backing, the U45JC is made of plastic. The top of the chassis is covered in an anti-scratch skin, which feels nice and does not show fingerprints or dust. Unfortunately the glossy plastic screen surround does; it is tough to keep clean, as is the display surface since that is also glossy.

Our ASUS U45JC-A1 review unit has the following specifications:
  • 14-inch 720p (1366x768) glossy panel with LED backlighting
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • Intel Core i3-370M dual-core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, 4.8GT/s QPI, 35W TDP)
  • Intel HM55 chipset
  • Switchable graphics via Nvidia Optimus technology:
  • Nvidia GeForce 310M w/ 1GB DDR3 memory
  • Integrated Intel HD graphics
  • 4GB DDR3-1066 dual-channel RAM (2x 2GB)
  • 500GB 5400RPM Seagate hard drive (ST9500325AS)
  • Atheros AR9285 802.11n wireless LAN
  • DVD burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GU10N)
  • 2-year global limited warranty w/ 1 year accidental damage coverage
  • 8-cell battery (11.1V, 5600mAh)
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs.
  • Dimensions: 13.5 x 9.6 x 1.1 inches
  • MSRP: $899
This is a general purpose and multimedia laptop with a focus on mobility; it is not designed for gaming (though its G310M graphics are capable of playing some games, as this review will show).

Sony VAIO EA Review

The Sony VAIO AE is the latest 14-inch general purpose laptop from Sony. The E-series notebooks are the most affordable full-featured notebooks in the VAIO product line and you can probably argue that the "E" stands for "Economy class." The laptop body is made of a combination of matte black plastics and polished plastics in your choice of Lava Black, Hibiscus Pink, Coconut White, Iridescent Blue, or Passion Purple colors. Our review sample is "Coconut White" but pearl white might be a more accurate description of the color in real life.

All of the plastics feel firm with no obvious flex or creaking sounds when you apply pressure to the chassis. Despite being designed as a budget laptop, the VAIO EA feels reasonably well built. The screen hinges offer enough resistance to hold the display in place yet aren't so tensioned that opening the laptop is difficult.

Our review unit of the Sony VAIO EA (VPCEA3CFX) has the following specifications:
  • Intel Core i3 370M (2.4GHz, 3MB L3 cache)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • 14-inch LED-backlit display (1366x768)
  • Intel GMA HD integrated graphics
  • 4GB DDR3 (1066MHz) system memory
  • 500GB hard drive (5400rpm)
  • CD/DVD player/burner
  • Bluetooth (2.1 + EDR)
  • Ethernet: 10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T
  • Wi-Fi: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (802.11/b/g/n)
  • Intel Wi-Di (wireless display transmitter)
  • Standard Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (5000mAh)
  • Dimensions: 13.60(W) x 1.07(H) x 9.39(D) inches
  • Weight: 5.2 pounds
  • Color: Coconut White
  • MSRP: $849 (optional $19.99 keyboard skin brings total to $868.99)

Toshiba Satellite A665 Full Review

The Toshiba Satellite A660 and A665 are 16-inch laptops with a reasonably attractive design and solid performance. If you're shopping for a desktop-replacement notebook the Satellite A665 might be a worthy choice. Keep reading to see what we think of this Core i5-equipped model with Nvidia discrete graphics.

Toshiba Satellite A665 (A665-S6089) Specifications:
  • 16-inch 720p (1366x768) display with LED backlighting
  • Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
  • Intel Core i5 460M (2.53GHz)
  • Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card w/ 512MB GDDR3 dedicated memory (Optimus switchable graphics)
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • 500GB 5400RPM hard drive (Toshiba MK5065GSX)
  • 802.11b/g/n wireless
  • DVD SuperMulti (+/- Double Layer)
  • Warranty: 1-Yr Parts and Labor, 1-Year Battery
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery (48Wh) and 90W power adapter
  • Weight: 6.52 lbs
  • Dimensions: 15 x 10 x 1.2-1.5 inches
  • Price as configured: $879.99

The Satellite A660/A665 is the latest generation of 16-inch multimedia notebooks from Toshiba and is the "big brother" to the Satellite M640/M645. At first glance, the design of the A665 is pretty traditional with sculpted edges, a mixture of smooth and textured glossy plastics, and some attractive LED accent lighting. If you're familiar with the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite M645 and 15-inch Satellite C655 then this laptop just looks like a larger version of those notebooks. The exterior is covered in what Toshiba calls the "Fusion X2 Finish in Charcoal." Personally, I call it black glossy plastic with a textured "chain" pattern imprinted in the surface to help hide fingerprints and dirt. Despite the silly marketing name for the finish, I have to give Toshiba credit here. The textured chain pattern gives you the modern look of the glossy plastics but doesn't look like a horrible magnet for smudges, dirt, or whatever else a student spills on a laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad T510 Review

The ThinkPad T510 is the 15.6" notebook from Lenovo that competes head-to-head with the HP EliteBook 8540p and the Dell Latitude E6510. The T510 offers optional NVIDIA NVS 3100M dedicated graphics, a full line-up of display options, and Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. In this review, we see how the ThinkPad T510 performs in our test lab and if you should add it to your Christmas shopping list.

Specifications:
  • 15.6-inch HD+ LED-backlit Display (1600x900)
  • NVIDIA NVS 3100M dedicated graphics with 512MB DDR3
  • Windows 7 Professional (64bit)
  • Intel Core i5-560M (2.66GHz, 3MB cache)
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM (2GB + 2GB)
  • 320GB Seagate 7200.4 HDD (7200rpm)
  • Intel 6200 802.11AGN, Bluetooth
  • 94Wh 9-cell, 90W 20V AC adapter
  • ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3
  • Dimensions: 14.68" x 9.65" x 1.41"
  • Weight: 6.22 pounds
  • Retail Price: $2,038.99 ($1,508.99 on sale) with docking station
The ThinkPad T510 has a "get down to business" appearance that has served the ThinkPad-series of notebooks very well. The outside finish is matte black, with a slight rubbery texture to increase grip when carrying it around. The design includes many flat surfaces with sharp and precise corners, but still manages to stay comfortable to use for hours on end. The screen hinges are stainless steel, and unlike the models two generations ago, are equal in size on both sides. Inside, the all-black appearance continues with a textured plastic palmrest, keyboard surround, and screen bezel. There are few, if any, glossy surfaces on the ThinkPad T510 which is great if you worry about glare from overhead lighting or sun while outdoors.
